Stephen, our nephew Erick Grochow and I went flyfishing on the Mississippi. This was the 25th of September and the afternoon weather was great! The flow was strong after all of the rain. By the sound of the news we maybe wouldn't be fishing the same place today.

A Day of Golf

The weather is changing and Fall is upon us. Time to make sure we get in a day of golf with Ayden and Aubrey. So Papa and Mitch took the two of them for a day of golf. Aubrey thought the ride in the cart was a hoot. She thought the cart should go faster. She giggled everytime we took off with the cart. Ayden? He had some really good shots. It is a ritual that Ayden has Mountain Dew when golfing so Papa brought along a small can of Dew for both Ayden and Aubrey.

Cousins Fun

The last two years Papa and Nana have taken the grandchildren for a 3 day adventure. This was the first year for Aubrey and Conner. Abram stayed home with Emily (the two of them did make a trip to Como Park and the Zoo while we were gone). This years itinerary was much a repeat of last year. We stayed at the lake place on Mille Lacs and then went to Paul Bunyan Land (or as it is now called The Farm). Then to Pirates Cove to play mini golf and drive go carts. The last wonderful outing was a day at the beach. We loaded everyone in the boat and off we went.

It was so much fun to see the faces of Conner and Aubrey as they were greeted by Paul Bunyan. How did he know my name Papa? After a couple of hours on the rides the two youngest wanted to go back and talk to Paul Bunyan. So, we went back. And, he welcomed them back! Conner waved as hard as he could and said hi!!!!

This past June Marion and I took Seth and Brienna to the Black Hills. This was their birthday present from Papa and Nana.

We are all packed up and ready to head er West!

First stop? Mitchell, South Dakota and the corn palace.

First morning out we headed for Mount Rushmore. We rose very early in the morning. We forgot we were in another time zone so we were indeed early. We stopped at a spot along the road and really did not realize what was above us! Here is a picture of Brienna, Seth, Papa and George!

Below - we are ready to start the tour of Mount Rushmore.

Custer State Park was a real hit. The buffalo, wild donkeys and prairie dogs were so close! Seth kept saying over and over again "I could live here". While standing near a herd of buffalo he said "this is the most awesome thing I have ever done!"

8 men with myself from First Covenant Church in Willmar spent 5 days in Minaki Ontario Canada fishing. The weather was wet windy and cold but the fishing was HOT!We stayed at Sand Lake Outpost. Some outpost! We had all the comforts of home and even more! What a beautiful place to stay! Thanks Rob!

Grandaughter's Christmas Adventure

Shortly after returning to the Reese home in Otsego with our grandsons (see blog below on the boys adventure) Sarah and Emily arrived with Jenna and Aubrey. No time was wasted preparing the girls for their adventure. Fingernails and toenails were polished along with hair preparations for all 3 princesses. Then it was off to bed anticipating a fun day to follow.
The next morning we were all up early in the morning and after some breakfast the final preparations were done. Hair, earings, necklaces and tiaras were all worked on and in place before the princesses coach left for the adventure.
The first stop of the adventure was to the Chatterbox in St. Paul where the girls played Mario Brothers and ate the meal of their choice. Then it was off to the Ordway! Good seats in the balcony gave the girls a great view of the performance of Beauty and the Beast. The performance was very well done and the 3 princesses enjoyed it very much. After the performance we waited at the stage door where the girls had pictures taken with some of the actors - Chip, Cogsworth and YES! Belle!
As the Princesses viewed the beauty of the decorated trees in Rice Park Papa went to get the coach which picked them up at the front door and it was time to return to the Reese Castle in Otsego where the King and the Queen of the house prepared pizza for the princesses.

Papa and Nana thank Sarah and Emily for bringing the girls to Otsego and bringing the boys back home. We also thank Stephen and Klair for the use of their castle for accommadations, breakfast and the evening meal. Thanks to Klair for all of her work preparing the girls hair and of course Papa thanks Nana for all the work she did and enduring the long ride.
A great time was had by all!

Grandson's Christmas adventure

December 30th we loaded up 3 of the 4 grandsons and headed out for an adventure. First stop was at Great Grandma Reese's new home in Gaylord. We missed Christmas Eve with Mom this year because of a snow storm. This was the third Christmas Eve we missed with her over the years and it simply didn't seem right to not be with Mom or go to church in Winthrop for the Christmas Eve service. Yet our visit was fun since we had the 3 boys with us.
After Gaylord we made the long trip to Kellogg Minnesota to visit Lark Toy Company. First off we ate at the toy company and then took a ride on the hand carved carousel at the toy company. Conner rode a gold fish, Ayden rode a 10 point buck, Seth rode a loon and Papa rode a bear. The giggles were fun to hear.
After the toy company we went to Wabasha and had fun in the pool at the Americinn. Everyone slept well that night.
The next day was the highlight of the trip. We all enjoyed a visit to the National Eagle Center. The pictures tell the story. The boys got up close to the eagles - closer than they ever thought they would ever get to an eagle. We also saw many, many eagles around the open water on the Mississippi in Wabasha.
We then headed to Otsego to Stephen and Klair's home to meet Sarah and Emily who were bringing Jenna and Aubrey to meet us for the girls adventure and take Seth and Ayden back home. The boys had a great time and so did Papa and Nana!!!

Larrie and Lou Ann invited us all to spend a day in their back yard and it was a day to remember. It was great to be together with my brother, sisters and Mom and enjoy all of the fun and laughter in and around the pool. The weather was great, the food was delicious and the conversations, reaquaintences and memories shared were wonderful.

The Project

The "project" as it came to be called is completed! It started out as a discussion as to what to do about the patio concrete that was cracking, moving, and starting to tilt toward the house. It was going to cause a problem with a heavy rainfall and something had to be done.

If we are going to do this project we should move the air conditioning unit away from the patio to reduce the noise. If we are going to move it we should really replace it for it is 27 years old. Then if we are going to replace the AC unit we find it is best to also replace the furnace. Then I decided to run power out to the barn. Then it was to remove the old concrete (26,500 lbs. of CONCRETE!) and then dig out the area to build a new patio. Then haul in crushed concrete, granite sand, black dirt, pavers, patio blocks, caps, etc. Level out the crushed concrete and granite sand build the walls, place the caps, run electrical wire under it all for the fountain -- oh my -- I think you get the idea. This kind of project ALWAYS gets bigger once one gets into it.

Well, it was a lot of work. Bill came and helped with the concrete removal and Stephen came to help me put down the pavers. Sarah came and helped Marion plant the garden. Emily has promised to come and help with the staining of the deck. This still has to be completed.

Spending a day with Mom

Stephen, Brienna and Conner traveled to visit Mom on April 10 to celebrate Mom's 93rd birthday. Emily, Ayden, Aubrey, Abram, Marion and I also went to Mom's that same day. We had a nice time together visiting. Mom got to meet her newest Great Grandson Abram and we had a picnic lunch with cake and everyone sang happy birthday to Mom. The time together was precious and Mom really enjoyed the visit and when it was over she didn't want to let us go.

We went outside and played on the playground and flew kites on the ball field next to the center.

Spring Break Cruise 2009

It is Spring Break

It was our first cruise and had a great time.

We left Tampa Sunday night the 22nd of March and spent Monday at sea. Tuesday we stopped at Georgetown Grand Caymen where we swam with the stingrays. What an experience!

Wednesday we stopped in Cozumel. We didn't spend much time on shore for there were 8 cruise ships that pulled in at the same time. Cozumel is a small island and it was crawling with people. Thursday was spent at sea and we arrived in Tampa Friday morning. After leaving the ship we flew home. Saturday we spent time going through our videos and pictures reliving the great time that we had. As we did so the house continued to rock back and forth all day long!!!

The best part of the cruise was meeting people from all over the world. Beautiful people who we became friends with and enjoyed pool time and gormet meals with. THE FOOD!! My goodness - I know we didn't have to eat all that they put in front of us but ------ it was soooooo goooooood!

Today Ayden, Aubrey and Papa made a snowman in Papa and Nana's backyard. Aubrey came up with a unique name for the snowman --- Frosty.

We had a great time making the snowman. After making Frosty we headed for a park a couple of blocks away and played on the swings and the slide. The kids had a great time and we shared laughter and giggles. As Ayden walked to the park he jumped into every puddle and walked in whatever water he could find. He had a great time. Oh the joy of being a little boy! It all brought back memories for me of my wonderful childhood.

And the question was ---- Is spring here? By the looks of Frosty at the end of the day I think so. Either that or Frosty is trying to do a little scuba diving in our backyard.

Abram Jorgen Schueler

Monday afternoon Papa headed for the Schueler's to sit with Ayden and Aubrey while Emily went to a Doctor's appointment. Emily called back and told me that they would be home shortly. Mitch would be coming to pick Emily up and head for the hospital. At 10:57 PM our 7th grandchild was born. But, Mitch and Emily would not tell us if it was a boy or girl and of course no name until we came to the hospital. With Ayden and Aubrey in bed the decision was made to wait until the next morning to go to the hospital. I could hardly sleep! It was a long night.

The next morning Ayden, Aubrey, Nana and Papa headed for the hospital to meet Abram Jorgen Schueler!

Christmas and New Year

Christmas and New Years are meant to be times with family. Christmas Eve we first traveled to Winthrop to go to church and then we drove to Lafayette to spend the evening with Doug's Mom, Brother, Sisters and spouses Larrie and Lou Ann, Sharon and Tom, Betty and Roger and Mary and Larry. It was a very pleasant evening visiting, enjoying each others company and of course eating some of our favorite Swedish treats.

Christmas Day Marion and I first went to the Schueler's and had brunch and watched the enjoyment while Ayden, Aubrey and yes Mitch and Emily opened Christmas gifts.

After a very relaxing time at the Schuelers we drove to the Jagows and enjoyed time together with Jenna, Seth, Sarah and Bill.

That evening Stephen, Klair, Brienna and Conner came to our house. They stayed Friday and Saturday night. Stephen and I went ice fishing on Friday. On Saturday we had our family Christmas at our home. Then once again we went ice fishing - this time Mitch joined us.

On Sunday Stephen and family headed out early in the morning (Stephen had tickets for the Vikings game).

On New Years Day we went sleding with the Jagows and Schuelers. What a great day for this. Everyone had a great time.

Water Park FUN!!

This past weekend we met our children and their families at the Mall of America Water Park and Motel. We stayed Friday and Saturday night and most hours that we were awake were spent at the water park. I love water parks and we all had a fantastic time together.

We all decided that rather than giving gifts we would spend a weekend together building memories. The children loved the Eagles Nest. This is a 10 story water slide. Seth enjoyed a pool with basketball hoops. Ayden enjoyed the hot tub. Brienna and Jenna loved the water slides. Bill, Stephen and I enjoyed the boogie boarding! What a great time! Even Nana went down the Eagles Nest water slide! She really enjoys the tubing on the lazy river.

Memories? Yes, I think all will remember this great weekend away and together!

Thanksgiving at the Reese's in Otsego

This year the Schuelers went to the Schueler farm for Thanksgiving and the Jagows drove to Nebraska to spend Thanksgiving with Bill's sister and her family.

So we were invited to and enjoyed a relaxing day at the Reese's in Otsego. Stephen cooked up a storm and Klair decorated the table -- it was beautiful! The food was awesome!

Marion and I spent the day enjoying fun with Brienna and Conner. Marion and Brienna made Pilgrim hats out of cookies, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Chiclets! Papa wrestled and tickled Conner and Brienna and even watched some of High School Musical with Brienna.

It was a very relaxing, pleasant and enjoyable day together.

Fun with Grandchildren - Already missing the warm weather!

Now that the nice warm weather is gone we look back at our wonderful Fall weather and cringe thinking about what follows. We do enjoy (We have to here in Minnesota) some - I say some - of the Winter. The snow is beautifuland fun. The cold fresh air is refreshing and we do enjoy ice fishing. But does Winter have to be sooooooo long. You cannot convince us Minnesotan's that our climate is warming up. This year we went from Winter to Summer. Not much of a spring and the worst part is it didn't come until JUNE! So here is to our nice warm weather. Please return ASAP!

Marion's Magical Mystery Tour

Marion always has time off during MEA and normally we find somewhere to go and simply enjoy eachother's company. So nice to get away from it all.

Well, this year Doug kept it all a secret until it all happened. First we went to Hutchinson and had breakfast with Marion's mother who didn't know we were going to be there and Lynette - Marion's sister who was in on the plan. Then we headed for Lafayette to see Doug's Mom. Then we headed down hwy. 19. Through Winthrop, Gaylord, Henderson and on to Northfield stopping for an ice cream cone. Then back on the road and arriving at our destination Red Wing. We stayed two nights at the Pratt Taber Inn. A B&B that has become our favorite. A beautiful house with woodwork that is beyond belief and a hostess (Deb) who is so fun we felt like we were visiting an old friend! Thanks Deb! Deb was in on the secret also.

We took in the beautiful Fall colors, Fantastic Downtown Red Wing, the paddleboat American Queen (out of New Orleans), National Eagle Center in Wabasha and most small town shops along Lake Pepin. The weather was great and the colors were at their peak!

After Red Wing we headed for Summit Ave. in St. Paul where we walked looking at the beautiful homes and fall colors. We stayed at the Capitol Hill B&B, ate at W.A. Frost and Co. and enjoyed an evening at the Ordway.

Marion and I attended her Gaylord High School 40th class reunion. We had fun renewing friendships and reaquianting ourselves with all who attended. They had memorabilia from their days at GHS which was fun to look at together.

They also had candies from days gone by on all of the tables. As you can see one of those were the wax lips!

Fall Fun - Atwater Threshing show

Marion and I took Seth, Jenna, Ayden and Aubrey to the Atwater Threshing Show. This is the second year in a row that we have gone to this show. Last year we took Seth and Jenna and they loved it so much we made a quick decision on Friday to take Ayden with us. Well, when we left we had Aubrey with us also. It was a fun day for the children and since it was fun for them it was fun for us. Ayden loved the tractors, Seth enjoyed the engines Aubrey enjoyed the animals, ice cream and the swings, Jenna enjoyed the school and the big tubes to play on. Both Ayden and Jenna made some ropes to walk and they plan to use the ropes to walk their dogs. We all enjoyed the food, the theshing machine and the tractor parade.

It was a great day!

Zihuatanejo!

After 17 years we finally returned to Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa. It was wonderful to return and see the changes but yet to see how the area has retained it's wonderful character! We had a FANTASTIC time with our best friends Denis and Sandy Anderson and Randy and Martha Alsleben. Snorkeling, fishing, shopping, sitting on the beach, cerveza, sitting on the beach, parasailing, did I mention sitting on the beach, walking the beach, watching the beautiful sunsets, sitting on the beach, enjoying the surf, swimming and did I mention sitting on the beach?

The food was great, the weather was very predictable and pleasant and the comraderie was the BEST!

We returned on the 20th - my birthday and the first day of Spring and it snowed! We got somewhere between 12 and 15 inches of wet snow. Previous to this snow I only used our snowblower 2 times this Winter. I used it two times on Good Friday! Good Gravy!!!

OK, now your going to look at this and think why did they advertise for AARP? We didn't! In this case it stands for Alsleben, Anderson, Reese Pals. We have been together for many years meeting every Friday night enjoying each others company. And, we call ourselves AARP.

Zihuatanejo was the very best and we are already talking about returning!

Fun Day at the U of M Aquatic Center

Bill and Sarah started swimming in the Masters Swimming program. Their first meet was held at the U of M Aquatic Center. It was a nice way to escape the winter cold for a day. Before this Sarah didn't have a chance to swim in the Aquatic Center. When she swam in the State Swimming meet in high school this facility hadn't been built yet. She has coached at this facility. Now, she had the opportunity to swim there. It was fun to see both Bill and Sarah compete. It was kind of a flash back to days gone by for Marion and I.

Conner and his neb

Conner has now become much calmer when using his neb! He sits quietly and watches TV. What a difference! Before this you had to hold the mask close to his face as he screamed and arm wrestled with Stephen and Klair. What a relief to know he accepts is so calmly now.

Stephen and Klair came on the 15th of February to spend Saturday with us. It was great having them all here and besides that Stephen installed new tile in our basement bathroom. I made the big decision to heat the floor and am I ever glad I did. That nice warm floor is wonderful on the bare feet every morning after taking a shower. You sure can tell where the heating elements are and where they are not. What a difference! Thank you so much Stephen for all your hard work!

I have once again been ignoring my responsibility to keep our blog up. I kind of wait for something of significance to take place or some pictures to put on the blog before I enter another post. I just haven't felt that there has been anything too terribly significant happening around here. It has been COLD! We have been hiding out in the house as much as possible. Removing wall paper from the downstairs bathroom and one of the upstairs bedrooms. How exciting is that!? This coming weekend Stephen is coming to put in new tile in our basement bathroom and then that renovation is completed. The upstairs bedroom is painted, new curtains and shades are up and we have some new furniture in the bedroom which is no longer a bedroom. It is now an office. It is very comfortable, the furniture is beautiful and so are the walls and the curtains.

Are you excited by all of this? Hmmm, I didn't think you would be.

Marion and I ventured out into the wind, snow and cold last Saturday (Marion's Birthday! Uh uh - I aint telling you - she can tell you if she wants). We drove to Minneapolis in the cold and snow to go to the camper show. Stephen was there selling campers. We went primarily to look at park models. We found one we like. Now we just have to buy that lottery ticket and win. Fat chance!

We are looking forward to the Ides of March for a couple of reasons.

Mitchell will be departing the Navy and the Schueler family will be traveling to Minnesota. No job yet so we are not sure where they will be taking up permanent residence. Where does God want the Schuelers? It is really hard for us to not be selfish and hope that the Schueler's Ninevah is a little closer to Willmar, Minnesota so that visits are more frequent. Yet, we know that the Schuelers will go where God wants them to. We pray that God's lead will be evident to the Schueler family.

While the Schuelers are traveling from Virginia to Minnesota we will be in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo Mexico. It has been 16 years since the last time we went to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. We really enjoyed the last two trips we made there and this time will be even more special. We are going with our best friends the Andersons and Alslebens. We are planning to enjoy the sun, thaw out a little, enjoy each others company, go snorkeling and we have chartered a fishing boat for a day. We may even get in some golf.

Enough dreaming about a month from now and back to work, cold and blue fingernails and toenails.

Ho!

Merry Christmas! We celebrate the Birth of Our Savior! Jesus Christ!

Christmas Day the Jagows and the Monticello Reeses all gathered at our home. Lots of presents, food and love enjoyed by everyone.

Stephen got a new set of waders. He will be fly fishing the Mississippi more often. Seth liked playing with the gifts even before he opened them. Such a patient boy. Jenna and Brienna just enjoy being together. And, Conner?! He couldn't wait to open another present. Take turns? I don't think so. Go to Nanna Conner - she will let you open your present.

Doug got a sweatshirt and hat from the Schuelers. It is great! It is a sweatshirt and cap from the USS North Carolina! I have worn it with pride a number of times already and will continue to do so!

Thank you Schuelers! We missed being togther this year but look forward to next year. AND, hearing where the Schuelers will call home after Virginia/Navy.

Christmas Eve was spent the same as all other years. That is whenever possible! Weather and the Navy has kept me from spending a couple of Christmas Eves away from Winthrop. This Christmas Eve we went to church with Mom, Larry and Lou Ann and most of the Wisch family. After church we drove to Lafayette where we met Tom and Sharon, Suz and Bob with their 3 boys (who entertained us all!), Roger and Betty and Larrie and Lou Ann. Will told me about his ice fishing experiences and Bob told me about his deer hunting. Jake and Tucker simply entertained us all. The joy and laughter of the children is wonderful. It was a great evening of visiting with family and listening to Mom play a few songs on the piano.

This past Thursday I set work aside and went to visit Mom in Lafayette. I went to visit Mom but I also went to celebrate God's answer to prayer!

My brother Larrie was also going to visit Mom on that day and I decided that it would be good to be there and share in the joy of answered prayer with my Big Brother!

Larrie had surgery a couple of years ago for prostate cancer. Everything had been good up until about a month to a month and a half ago when the doctors did some tests and it resulted in them telling Larrie that the cancer was back. My heart sunk! Larrie was to start radiation therapy so we started praying, our whole family started praying, we mobilized all of our resources for prayer. God answers prayer. Mom is a prayer warrior. And, we have all experienced the answers to prayer as a result of her consistent, unceasing prayer! Thank You Mom for the prayers and the lessons.

In this case God answered our prayers for before starting the radiation therapy the doctors wanted to do a biopsy and analyze it. Well, the results came back and the doctors are stumped for now THERE IS NO CANCER!

GOD CONTINUES TO HEAL AND ANSWER PRAYER! THIS IS A MIRACULOUS HEALING!

We love you Larrie and thank God for removing the cancer from you body! We shouldn't be surprised for the creator of all things can do anything!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Fall Hunting

First it was the deer hunt which for a change was successful for Doug! Yes, I got a nice 6 point buck! Surprised me also!

I have attached a picture of my deer stand. I built this deer stand 4 years ago with materials from Randy and Martha Alsleben's deck that they took off of their home. Thanks for the lumber Randy! The metal exterior is from Dennis Lindquist whos farm is where the deer stand is located. So a huge thank you to Denny for the allowance to hunt, build a deer stand and for the materials! What great friends! The deer stand is fully enclosed with sliding windows and heated. Needless to say I do not sufffer any of the effects of a cold Minnesota deer hunt. This year the weather was so warm I turned the heat on only one time.

On Saturday night about 3:00 when you do not expect to see a deer I called Marion (cell phones - heh - they are good in many -- not all situations) for I wanted to know exactly what time sundown was. She looked it up and told me and just as she told me I told her in a hushed voice I gotta go! I laid the phone down and took a shot at a 6 point buck that had simply appeared in front of me. I shot and the deer fell where it stood. I hit it in the neck and broke it's neck. I then picked up the phone and told Marion "I just shot a 6 pointer!" See the picture of the six pointer. Stephen didn't get a deer this year. In fact I don't think he even got to see one. Sorry Steve! Next year! Most years he outdoes his father. A few years now he has taken two deer to my none. I think it has been a 5 year deerless situation for me.

I am also displaying a picture of Stephen's deerstand. Mine is the one in the tree and Stephen's is the one that is free standing.

Then on Thanksgiving morning Bill and I went hunting. We were going after pheasants when we spotted a flock of ducks on a pond. A big flock of green heads and they were in a small area for the pond had froze over except for a couple of spots where there were geese and another spot where there was the flock of green heads. I did not have a stamp for ducks so Bill got out of the pick up and snuck up on the ducks took two shots and brought down 3 ducks. Nice shooting!

Then we went after pheasants and we scared up about 50to 60 birds! It was like it was back in the late 50's and 60's! The old man even shot a pheasant! It had to be the first pheasant that I have shot in at least 25 years. See the picture of the birds on the pickup tailgate.

Thanks to Stephen I had a successful deer hunt. For without him I maybe would not even go hunting. A Great Time With My Son!

Talking about GREAT TIMES! Thanks Bill! I really enjoyed our time together, watching those two dogs work the grass - they are great! And, being so kind to let the old man take a shot and even bag one!

A huge thank you to both of you for the time together and the escape from everything! It wasn't only recreational (a good work out) it was Re-Creational (good for my mind).

I know we are men, hunters, tough, er ah ah ah - but I still have to tell you that I love you both! And, this isn't a beer commercial.

MEA in Virginia

We spent MEA in Virginia visiting Mitch, Emily, Ayden, Aubrey and yes Zoe too!

We flew into Richmond, Virginia which is only an hour from the Schueler's home. Emily came and picked us up late at night. Ayden and Aubrey were at home in bed with one of Emily's friends staying at their home. We went to bed and the next morning Ayden and Aubrey came to wake Papa and Nana. Hugs and kisses in bed. How wonderful is that!

We visited the childrens museum, Ayden's school, A couple of parks, Colonial Williamsburg, a fun farm with animals, hayrides and lots of pumpkins!

Mitch is very busy preparing the U.S.S. North Carolina for it's first cruise. He gets very little family time and even less sleep. In spite of his rigorous schedule we were able to spend some time with him also. One night we went out for Mexican food which was superb! Even better it was Mitch and Em's treat! Good food, fantastic company and they paid! Can't beat a deal like that. We spent another evening at home with Mitch when he made us a fantastic meal. Mitch love to cook and does a superb job. Thanks Mitch!

Sarah's Birthday at Lake Carlos

We celebrated Sarah's birthday while camping at Lake Carlos State Park. Stephen, Klair, Brienna and Conner were camping with us along with Erick, Carrie and Olivia. It was a very windy weekend. So windy we didn't even put the boat in the water. Saturday was spent visiting the Carlos Creek Winery and going out to eat at Bugaboo Bay. Sarah was given a ice cream sundae for her birthday. From Bugaboo Sarah, Seth and Jenna headed home and we headed back to the campground. That night we sat at the fire and enjoyed each others company. Sunday morning it was a downpour! We had breakfast and headed home.

Now the motorhome and boat are both put away until next year. How sad is that!?

Another adventure awaits us next week (the 17th to the 22nd) when we fly to Virginia to visit the Schuelers. 6 more months and the Schuelers will be relocating. Where? We wonder and pray.

A Day at the threshing show

We took Seth and Jenna to the Atwater Threshing show and had a great day. We saw many old tractors. We visited the blacksmith and attended school in the old country schoolhouse. Papa was an attorney for a few minutes (that is long enough). Nana lived in the Gingerbread house and Seth and Jenna loved playing in the straw. We ate hamburgers and then had some homemade ice cream. It was a very fun day for the kids. Sarah said they talked about it until they fell asleep that night. Papa and Nana really enjoyed the day. Papa got to drive a 1948 Gibson tractor. That is one year older than Papa and it moved slower than I do.

Labor Day Weekend! Summer's End

We left Thursday. Marion reported to school on Thursday and had an open house and then a reception for School Nurses at one of the local clinics. We headed out about 3:30 for Mille Lacs Lake. We stopped just before getting to the campgrounds and since we were not sure where a good eating place was we ate at the buffet at Grand Casino Hinckley. Just walking through the casino hearing the sounds of the machines brings back memories of a week long convention for the National League of Cities which was held in Las Vegas. Ever since then I REALLY DO NOT LIKE BEING IN A CASINO! We had gone to the casino when we stayed at this same resort in June. We went to eat that time also but after about 3 minutes I told Marion I HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE! We left and found another place to eat that time. This time we just didn't have the time to look for another place to eat for it was getting dark and I wanted to get the motorhome set up before dark. We ate and left. We drove to the resort and set everything up. I decided to take a walk down to the lake and as I walked I for some reason reached for my cellphone. My new cellphone. My company cellphone. My very expensive company cellphone which I have had to 2 weeks. AND, YES it was gone. The carrier for the cellphone has a simple clip which goes on the belt and sometime when I sat down it came off of my belt. Long story short. Doug -- very upset -- take down everything we just set up (for the only mode of ground transportation we have is the motorhome) -- go to the casino -- could not find the cellphone ANYWHERE! We drove back to the resort set up the camper once again and went to bed.
The next day the Steeles, Rambergs, Hedmarks and Steve Reese families arrive. We call my cell and no answer - just my message for voice mail. So we call Sarah back in Willmar and tell her to go to our home and look in my pick up and our van. She found it in the van!!! I AM NOT going to use that cellphone carrier again! STRESS beyond belief!
So, we had an awesome weekend with friends! Fishing, sleeping, eating, fishing, eating, campfire, eating, fishing, food fight, eating, sleeping, fishing - I think you get the picture. No we did not catch many fish. In fact I did not catch one fish. Stephen? Oh yes, does he ever go fishing and not catch fish? This was probably one of his worst fishing expeditions however. He caught one walleye, one northern (which ------ came off next to the boat), and a number of rock bass! This is the total number of fish for the ENTIRE weekend! AND, to top it all off!? I came back home with one less anchor! BUT, we had a GREAT TIME! Honest! We did! Fantastic weather and Fantastic friends make for a -------- Fantastic Weekend!
Well, the camper is cleaned out the boat is put away and tomorrow Marion goes back to work and it is back ---- like they say ---- to the old grind. And, in some ways it will be good to do so.

What a summer we had! We are so blessed!

I'm still here!

It has been quite some time since entering a post on our blog. I'm not so sure anyone really reads it or noticed that fact.

After the triathlon in Glenwood we said good bye to Emily, Ayden and Aubrey. It was great to have them around to visit and share so much fun together. We received a very precious thank you from Ayden telling us how he enjoyed Lake Beauty Bible Camp, the paddle boats and enjoying a ride with Uncle Bill and Cousin Seth. He enjoyed craft time and of course the FIREWORKS! We had a GREAT TIME also Ayden and you made our time at LBBC so very special!

It was hard to say good bye. But we know that March of 08 is coming and we are anxious to find out where the Schueler's will be living.

After Em, Ayden and Aubrey left Marion and I took the motorhome and headed north. We were not sure where we would be camping but we headed north. As we drove I decided to call and see if Marclay Point (on Cass Lake) had any open camp sites. They did and we stayed on one of the best sites which is right on the lake facing west. So we fished, read and sat in the evening watching the sunsets. We stayed at Marclay Point from Sunday to Wednesday and then we moved to Sleeping Fawn Resort on Stocking Lake near Park Rapids. A beautiful pine shaded campgrounds on a very small lake. We fished one day on Stocking lake with very limited success (we didn't catch one fish - now that is limited). So the next day we loaded up the boat and headed for Upper and Lower Bottle lakes where we caught 10 during that day and what a beautiful day it was.

Our week of vacation ended with attending the wedding of Klair's sister Becky which was held in Bemidji. Stephen and Conner came Saturday morning and picked us up so that we didn't have to drive the motorhome to Bemidji. Becky married Mike Hiscock and the wedding was beautiful. Both Klair and Brienna were in the wedding and my goodness what two beautiful ladies! I will have to post some pictures from the wedding. Later that night there was a dance and our little Conner danced the night away and of course quickly passed out in the car on the way back to the campgrounds. The next morning we visited the cabin on Lower Bottle Lake where the Thole family was spending the next week and made breakfast. Shortly after breakfast we headed home.

I then worked a couple of days and then headed north again with Randy Alsleben, Denis Anderson and Terry Orpen to fish the Northwest Angle. I have never been in this area before. It was interesting that we cross the border into Manitoba, Canada and then we drive back into Minnesota again. When doing so you stop at a little building and call into customs on a video phone to re-enter Minnesota. Then when leaving you do the same thing to re-enter Manitoba. Then when fishing we are either fishing in Minnesota or Ontario, Canada. We had a wonderful time. That is short for the fishing wasn't fantastic but we did catch enough fish to eat while we were there and also bring home our limit. It is a beautiful area and we so enjoyed God's beautiful creation. Fishing, watching Eagles and enjoying each others company. It is good to slow down and escape the everyday life.

Now we are both home, Marion is preparing to go back to work/school. We are also preparing to head out for the Labor Day weekend. We are once again going camping, boating and fishing. We will be staying on Mille Lacs lake and camping with Stephen, Klair, Conner and Brienna and also with our wonderful friends Dean and Marlys Ramberg, their Daughter Beth her husband Don and their children and Tonya and Rick Hedemark and their family (all from the Harris, MN Covenant Church).

So, when we find time to download some pictures we will share them with you. Whomever reads this rambling I have no idea!

Glenwood Triathlon

All three did the complete triathlon. Each one biking, swimming and running. Bill and Sarah have done a number of triathlons. But, this was Emily's first.

Next weekend Bill and Sarah will be doing the Green Lake triathlon in Spicer.

A Couple of Great Days!

Thursday and Friday I took vacation to spend time with Emily, Ayden and Aubrey before they returned to Virginia. Thursday morning we all went to Freida's Cafe for breakfast and then Papa and Ayden headed out for a morning of fishing. Ayden caught one sunfish after another. He so enjoyed pulling them in and feeling them fight and "Papa they swim in a circle!". After fishing I took Ayden to the barber for a haircut and then out to A&W for a corn dog and a root beer. "Papa I really like root beer." We then had to get home for a nap. Yes, both of us! After the nap we went to the water park with Sarah, Seth, Jenna, Nana, Aubrey and Nana. What a fun afternoon! Then Ayden and Aubrey headed for the farm for the night and Emily went to Bill and Sarah's for some carbs and a good night sleep in preparation for the Glenwood Triathalon. Seth stayed at Papa and Nana's overnight and we left early in the morning to Glenwood to watch and take pictures. Then out for breakfast, back home for a little down time and then out to Bill and Sarah's for an evening and to say good by to our precious Emily, Ayden and Aubrey. Tomorrow they fly home to once again be with Mitchell. Thank you Mitch for sharing!!! I know it had to be a very lonesome and long time to be without your very, very precious family.

We are sad to see them all leave but yet glad that y0u can once again all be together. We love you all SO VERY MUCH!!!

Last weekend was a fun weekend spent in Duluth. The drive to Duluth started early in the AM with a stop at IHOP in St. Cloud for breakfast. Then driving the remaining distance to attend Luke and Ali's wedding. Most family members all stayed at the same motel located in the Canal Park area. Over the years Marion and I have built memories with our children and then by ourselves enjoying Duluth and the Canal Park area and this time was no different. Luke and Ali's wedding and celebration at the Kitchi Gama club was enjoyed by everyone. It was great visiting with everyone and enjoying the view of Lake Superior from the patio of the club! The full moon made it especially beautiful. The traditional dance took place without Wipe Out but none the less the dance was done by all including the bride in her wedding dress! And, Smiling the whole time!

Before and after the wedding we had great fun walking the boardwalk, eating out at some of the restaurants in the area and shopping! Hey, this is a great place! Yes, I admit I even enjoyed going into SOME of the shops. Don't tell Marion I wrote that!

Friends and Family at LBBC!

For 29 years Marion and I have been going to 4th of July Family Camp at Lake Beauty Bible Camp. Our children have grown up knowing that the 4th is spent at LBBC. We have many memories and more memories in the making.

Over those 29 years we have made many friends at LBBC. One VERY SPECIAL family is the Ramberg family. Dean and Marlys brought their children to LBBC each year as we have. Now our children have grown up and they are bringing their children. Dean and Marlys' daughter Buffy (ok, it's Beth - but who knows her by Beth?!) is married to Don Steele and the Steele family is one very awesome family! Beth, Don, Ashley, Amanda, Alex, Eric and Thomas. Beth asked for some LBBC pictures on our Blog. Well here they are!

Beth always says "We love you guys!" That love is coming back at you and your family.

We are looking forward to camping on Lake Mille Lacs with Stephen, Klair, Brienna and Conner and also our friends from Harris Covenant Church over the Labor Day weekend.

Summer 2007 is flying by!

We have had a wonderful summer. Right after school was out we had a week of "Fun In The Park" which is our church VBS. When VBS was over Marion and I left for Mille Lacs Lake for 10 days of eating, sleeping, and fishing. A couple of business associates of mine bought a resort on the lake and they are redoing it. They are not operating the resort right now for they are going to be rebuilding it and making it into seasonal camping site rentals. So, we had the resort to ourselves. We did some mowing, beach and lake clean up and put in 120 feet of dock. And, at the end of the dock it was only knee deep so more dock has to be put in.

After Mille Lacs I worked a couple of days and then we headed with our family (everyone but Mitch - The U.S. Navy thought he should stay and work, work, work, work, oh yeah!) to Lake Beauty Bible Camp for family camp. We had a fantastic time together!

After family camp I then worked a couple more days and then left for a week in Canada fishing. Our week of fishing was cut short for one of my best friends (Willie Vandorp who was with us) received word that his father died. So we cut the trip short and went home. We had some good fishing and it was good to get home, go to the funeral and even get a few things done around home.

Since returning it has been back to the routine. Emily, Ayden and Aubrey are here. They came on June 26th. They spend time with us and they also spend a lot of time at the Schueler farm. One of Ayden's favorite places. So favorite they had Ayden's 4th birthday party on the farm complete with a 90 degree (temperature) hayride! We had everyone on the rack. Even Great Grandma Grochow.

After Emily, Ayden and Aubrey leave Marion and I are hoping to go camping one more time before school starts again. Klair's sister is getting married in Bemidji and the week before that we are hoping to go camping near Lake Winnie for a few days or maybe even a week. I think we will be on Cut Foot Sioux.

Then the last week in August I am going fishing in the Northwest Angle for 3 days. When I return we are going camping over Labor Day weekend at the resort on Mille Lacs once again. We will be camping with Stephen and his family, and then 3 or 4 more other couples that we have made friends with at LBBC over the 29 years of LBBC family camps.

A relaxing Saturday at home

Today is Aubrey's first birthday and pappa and nana are not there. This is the first grandchild that we were not able to celebrate their first birthday with. Emily just sent us pictures and that makes me feel better. I still wish we had been there.
I had planned on going to the Mopars in the Park car show today in Shakopee but the weather kept me home. I wasn't going to take a chance of rain or worse hail with the car out in the open and no place to put in under shelter.
So, we had a day of work around the house and a visit from Klair, Brienna and Conner. We played scoop ball in the back yard and then had lunch together before they returned home. Brienna and I had a lot of fun playing scoop ball. She always enjoys that game. Conner enjoyed playing on the swing. Lots of giggles and smiles. I took Conner for a ride on the John Deere and he steered with a little help from Pappa. After we put the tractor back in the barn we were playing and Conner would walk to the door of the barn and look in at the tractor. He even said tractor! Grandchildren are such day brighteners.
Marion has two more days of work and then the summer break starts. The children are done with school but the staff has two more days. This coming week is our vacation bible school and Marion works with that. She has done it for a few years now. They hold the Bible school at 3 of our city parks as an outreach. Then next Sunday we will have an outdoor service with a picnic and huge blow up play things for the kids to play on. It is a wonderful time!
Then after the service is over we will have the motor home ready to go with the boat hooked up behind it and we are going to camp on Mille Lacs lake from the 11th to the 20th. I am really looking forward to some down time. I hope the weather cooperates so we can enjoy boating and fishing. Mille Lacs is 12 miles across from the west to east and I think it is about 18 miles north and south so we have a lot of water to cover. We should catch some walleye so we can have fresh fish. If I'm lucky maybe I can even fight with a muskie ------- or 2?!

Added some pictures to our blog

I added a number of pictures to our blog today. Most of them are from fishing and camping trips.

The one picture of the eagle carrying the walleye is great. The picture is real but it was "kind of set up". Randy had caught the walleye and he threw it back. The walleye was injured enough that it did not take off right away and the eagle came in and picked it up. What a shot! You can even see a few droplets of water still dripping from the fish.

I love the two loon pictures. They are such beautiful birds!

The picture of Marion and I standing in the snow was the weekend we were engaged. We are standing next to my Dart on Marion's home farm.

I hope you can see the pictures well enough to enjoy them.

Last Sunday (29th) I flew to Seattle and stayed over night near the airport. The next morning I traveled north to Chilliwack British Columbia for a Staff Council meeting for the Christian Labor Association. The Staff Council meeting was held at Stillwood Camp and Conference Center http://www.stillwood.ca/about.php

A very beautiful area and a very nice camp and conference center! The camp is surrounded by mountains and some that are snow capped. It rained most of the days -- but Monday when we arrived in the area we stopped at a restaurant at a par 3 golf course. The sun was shining as we sat and ate our noon lunch and many golfers were enjoying the beautiful day. The greens were so very green and the mountains were breathtaking. Many of them still covered in snow.

I returned home on Thursday night - very good to be home. The weather was very nice while I was gone but when I returned home it turned to rain, wind, and cool temps. I guess I brought it with me from the Pacific Northwest.

Today I have been working inside of the house putting the house back in order after a lengthy remodel of the living room. I have also installed a new computer. Wow! It is so nice compared to the old computer which was a Nobilus (never heard of it right!) and the old computer still operated with Windows 98. So going to the new computer is light years ahead of what we had previously.

Tomorrow is Sunday and we will be celebrating Grandson Seth's 6th birthday. I hope the weather improves for tomorrow that the grandchildren can all be outside and play. Enough rambling for now.

Pappa and Nana Reese

We live in the frozen tundra of Minnesota. The land of blue toes and fingers. Winter only of course for it get's hot and humid in the summer and then the state bird comes out - the mosquito!

Don't get the wrong idea - we love it here. We should we have lived here all of our lives (except for a short period of time serving in the Navy).

Nana is a scool nurse in an elementary school and Pappa is a National Representative for the Christian Labor Association and a City Councilman.

We have 3 children- all of them are married and they all have 2 children -- 1 girl and 1 boy each! Good planning huh!

Wow! Do we love our children, their spouses and of course our precious little blessings - our grandchildren. We are so very blessed!

Pappa has a boat and a collector car, loves to fish especially in Canada!

Nana loves her flowers, children, grandchildren, house and I think she loves Pappa too! Heh! Pappa is writting this.

We both love our summers when we take our motorhome and boat and head north for weeks at a time! Sleeping, reading, sitting by the fire and of course FISHING! Oh - Life is good!
